Manatee sheriff: Deputy nabs burglar caught in the act

MANATEE -- A deputy arrested a burglary suspect right after he broke into a business in southern Manatee County early Thursday, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

The deputy saw the suspect, later identified as Thomas Rogers, 47, drive up to the front of Trademark Aluminum, 2112 Whitfield Park Avenue East, about 4 a.m. Rogers drove to the rear of the business and parked on the side near the back, according to a news release.

He got out and started to jump a fence. The deputy called for backup, and Rogers was arrested after he entered the business, according to the report.

After he was read his rights, Rogers admitted he was there to steal aluminum from the side of the building so he could sell it for scrap, according to the report.

Rogers was charged with burglary and was being held at the Manatee County jail on $5,000 bond.
