Man arrested in connection to deadly Sarasota shooting

SARASOTA -- A 31-year-old Sarasota man has been arrested in connection with an altercation that led to a deadly shooting late Monday.

Troy Hugan is currently charged with one count of domestic battery for a physical altercation with a woman and four counts of aggravated assault for threatening her and three of her friends with a gun when they came to her rescue.

The man who was killed has been identified as Edwin Frett, 50, of Sarasota. He arrived at the scene, in the 4000 block of U.S. 301, after his daughter called and told him about the fight with Hugan and the shooting erupted a short time later at about 11:44 p.m., according to a news release.

"Detectives continue speaking with witnesses and victims to determine the exact chain of events," the release states.

Two of the shooting victims were treated and released. A third victim is currently hospitalized in stable condition.
