Palmetto man charged in accident that injured inmate, deputy

MANATEE -- A 46-year-old Sarasota man in custody who was being transported to Manatee County Jail this morning was seriously injured when a car driving in the opposite direction came across the median and struck a marked sheriff's car, the Florida Highway Patrol reports.

The accident at 2:50 a.m. occurred on U.S. 41 near 25th Street East.

The 58-year-old Palmetto man driving a 1998 Lexus was also seriously injured, the FHP report said.

The driver of the sheriff's patrol unit suffered minor injuries.

Combined damage to the two cars was estimated at $15,000.

The driver of the Lexus, Mark J. Headley, was charged with driving on wrong side of a divided highway.
