Woman, 48, dies in Sarasota crash

SARASOTA -- A 48-year-old Sarasota woman was killed Sunday evening when the SUV she was driving was struck by a car whose driver ran a flashing red light, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The accident happened about 8:37 p.m. at the intersection of Honore Avenue and Proctor Road. Dixie Ann Gallagher was driving east on Proctor Road. As Gallagher, who had a flashing amber light, drove through the intersection, her Ford Explorer was hit by a car heading south on Honore, according to a news release.

FHP said the driver of the Chevrolet Impala failed to stop at the flashing red light.

The impact on the left side of the Explorer forced it to overturn and land on its right side.

A passenger in the Explorer, an 80-year-old woman, was taken to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton, where she was listed in serious condition.

The driver of the Impala was taken to Doctors Hospital in Sarasota with what were described as minor injuries, according to FHP.
