Sarasota bail bondsman's gunfire draws investigation

SARASOTA -- A bail bondsman shot a gun at a wanted person's vehicle in Sarasota today and the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is mounting an investigation.

The incident happened at 3:50 p.m. at Blanche Place and 56th Street, according to a sheriff's office report.

Bail bondsman Nathan Rockwell was trying to arrest Kyle M. Courtwright when Courtwright fled in a vehicle. Rockwell fired at the vehicle, hitting a tire, according to the report.

Courtwright is currently wanted for failing to appear in court, obstruction without violence, driving on a suspended license and fleeing to elude the law, the report adds. Despite his tire being hit, Courtwright drove to the area of Whitfield Avenue and University Parkway where he jumped out of the vehicle and began to run south.

Responding sheriff's office deputies set up a perimeter in an attempt to locate Courtwright, but he was never found, the report states.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the sheriff office's criminal investigations section at 941-861-4900 or leave an anonymous tip with Crimestoppers at 941-366-8477 or www.crimestoppers.com.
