Bradenton man charged with killing his brother in Sarasota on Easter Sunday

SARASOTA -- A Bradenton man has been charged with shooting his brother to death when they opened fire on a residence where they had gone to collect on an alleged $300 debt, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.

Joshuat Lopez-Santana, 19, and his brother Carlos Lopez-Santana, 17, had gone to an apartment in the 3600 block of Butler Avenue. As soon as they got out of their car, witnesses told investigators they opened fire.

A bullet fired by Joshuat Lopez-Santana struck his brother in the head, another round narrowly missed a man standing in the doorway, according to a sheriff's office news release.

When two men ran out the rear of the apartment, Lopez-Santana ran them down and shot one of them, a 33-year-old man, twice, according to the sheriff's office. The other man was not injured.

Lopez-Santana then went to the front of the apartment, picked up his brother and put him in the car. He fled the scene but then crashed as deputies caught up to him. He was then arrested, according to the sheriff's office.

The wounded man was taken to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton, where he was listed in stable condition.

Lopez-Santana was being held without bond at the Sarasota County jail. He faces charges of felony murder, first-degree attempted murder and second-degree attempted murder.

Lopez-Santana's address was listed as being in the 1000 block of Temple Avenue, Bradenton, which is just southwest of the intersection of 14th Street West and Orlando Avenue West.
