Motorcyclist dies of injuries after crash in Palmetto

PALMETTO -- A motorcyclist hit by a car Tuesday night in Palmetto has died from his injuries, the Florida Highway Patrol has reported.

The collision, between the motorcycle and a car at about 11:35 p.m., closed a portion of Business U.S. 41 in Palmetto for more than an hour.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a car was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes. The driver of another car heading north in front of the motorcyclist was able to swerve to avoid a head-on collision, but the motorcycle, driven by David J. Quackenbush, 28, of Palmetto, was unable to avoid the oncoming car.

The impact ejected Quackenbush from his motorcycle and onto the oncoming car's hood and windshield. He finally landed in the center median, the accident report said.

Quackenbush was taken to Blake Medical Center in critical condition, where he died Wednesday from his injuries, the Highway Patrol said.

The driver of the other car, Jesse L. Kates Jr., 32, of Bradenton, sustained minor injured and was cited at the time of the accident for careless driving, the report said.
