Sarasota SWAT team arrests sexual battery suspect

SARASOTA -- The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office has arrested Raul Castro, 47, of Sarasota, and charged him with one count of kidnapping and one count of sexual battery.

Detectives say a 24-year old woman reported that Castro let her use his cell phone and then agreed to give her a ride home from a shopping center on Cattlemen Road about 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 22.

Castro told her he had to stop on the way at his residence in the 3600 block of Egerton Circle.

The victim reported Castro threatened her with a machete and forced her into his home. The victim said she was kept there against her will and sexually battered until 3 p.m., Friday, Dec. 23, when Castro became distracted and she was able to escape, according to a sheriff's press release.

Detectives obtained a warrant for Castro's arrest and the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office SWAT team took him into custody at 3 a.m. today.

Castro has been booked into the Sarasota County Jail and is being held on $200,000 bond.
