Police dog captures auto theft suspect in Bradenton

MANATEE -- A 27-year-old auto theft suspect was arrested after a police dog chased and captured him, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

About 10:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 3000 block of 14th Street West, the dog's handler spotted Russell Puhl driving a silver Honda Odyssey reported stolen earlier out of Bradenton.

When back-up arrived, the deputy tried to stop Puhl in the 4400 block of First Street. The driver refused, and the pursuit eventually lead to the 3500 block of 14th Street West, where Puhl bailed out of the van and ran, according to the sheriff's office.

The deputy released his dog, who was able to apprehend Puhl.

Puhl faces charges of motor vehicle theft, fleeing to elude and driving with a suspended license. He was in the Manatee County jail on bonds totaling $11,000.
