Surveillance video and photos released in Sarasota slaying

SARASOTA -- The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office released photos and surveillance video in connection to the slaying of a Port Charlotte man earlier this month.

The images show James Brotherton, 49, wearing a beige shirt, next to an unidentified man wearing a black jacket moments before Brotherton was killed on Nov. 21.

The men were at a Bank of America ATM in Beneva Village at 11:49 p.m., a media release said.

About four minutes later, Brotherton was shot dead at Curtiss Avenue and Gulf Gate Drive, according to the media release.

A deputy found Brotherton’s body at about 12:30 a.m. the next day. Brotherton’s vehicle was found near Stickney Point Road and Gateway Drive at about 5:20 a.m.

The sheriff’s office asks anyone with information to call criminal investigations at 941-861-4952 or Crime Stoppers at 941-366-8477. Crime Stoppers is offering up to $1,000 for any information leading to an arrest.
