Port Charlotte man shot to death in Sarasota

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is investigating the shooting death of a Port Charlotte man whose body early Tuesday was found lying on the ground at Curtiss Avenue and Gulf Gate Drive in Sarasota.

A deputy on routine patrol discovered the body of James Brotherton, 49, just after midnight. Emergency medical services responded to the scene and declared him dead, according to a news release.

No suspect has been identified.

Investigators have determined the shooting occurred at approximately 11:53 p.m. Monday and they are interested in speaking to the occupant or occupants of a vehicle that passed by shortly after the shooting occurred. Brotherton’s vehicle was located near Stickney Point Road and Gateway Drive about 5:20 a.m., according to the sheriff's office
