Man electrocuted on Palmetto farm

MANATEE -- A 44-year-old Wimauma man was killed Wednesday afternoon after a metal boom on the tractor he was driving came in contact with a live electrical wire, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office

One of two metal booms on Fernando Melechor’s tractor, which had a fertilizer tank attached, came in contact with the live wire about 1:45 p.m. at Wm. P. Hearne Produce Farms on Carter Road, a media release said.

Melechor was electrocuted when he got off the tractor and touched the ground, the release said.

Several farm workers tried to help the victim but he was already dead, the release said. The death appears to have been an accident, according to the sheriff’s office.
