MANATEE — A 22-year-old woman said she left the scene of an accident Thursday morning because she didn’t realize she’d hit a pedestrian, the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office reports.
What Britanie Wagner thought was an animal or garbage can turned out to be her father, who was crossing the road in the 1800 block of 55th Avenue East at about 2:15 a.m.
Deputies caught up with Wagner in the 5400 block of 14th Street West, several blocks from the accident scene.
After being read her rights, Wagner said she didn’t realize she’d hit a person until her passenger told her, the report stated. Wagner replied to her friend with, “Oh my God, I hit my dad,” not because she recognized him but because she knows he walks on that road, according to reports.
Damage to Wagner’s car included a broken passenger side mirror and a large crack on the passenger side windshield, the report said.
Wagner is required to wear glasses when she drives and admitted she was driving without them. Her father was transported to Manatee Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Wagner has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident and violation of driver license restrictions. She is currently in Manatee County jail on bonds totaling $5,120.
