MANATEE -- A 29-year-old man was bitten by a police dog and arrested Tuesday after he ran from a traffic stop, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.
A sheriff's detective pulled Richard Coney over in the 5600 block of 15th Street East about 11:40 a.m. because his vehicle had an expired tag, according to a news release. As soon as he stopped, Coney got out of his car and fled on foot.
A K9 deputy and his dog were nearby and joined in the chase. Coney was tracked to an abandoned residence.
The deputy gave him several chances to surrender but he continued to hide in the garage. The dog ultimately bit Coney on the finger, causing a minor injury, according to the sheriff's office.
Coney was taken to Lakewood Ranch Medical Center and later to the Manatee County jail on charges of obstruction, trespassing and felony driving with license suspended. He was being held on bonds totaling $2,620.
