MANATEE — A 17-year-old boy was arrested and charged with robbery by sudden snatching after he took a 73-year-old woman’s purse Monday, deputies said.
The incident occurred at 3:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Sweetbay Supermarket, 5802 14th St. W., according to a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office report.
The victim was walking through the parking lot when a juvenile approached her and asked for her empty cart.
The woman then had her purse snatched from her arm and hands, according to a Sheriff’s Office report.
The juvenile fled on foot while the victim screamed for help.
Two citizens heard the screams and ran after the juvenile, finally catching him in the Shell parking lot at 57th Avenue and 14th Street West, the report states.
The purse was recovered and returned it to the victim. They did not detain the juvenile, but when deputies arrived on the scene they tracked down the juvenile in the 1100 block of 58th Avenue West.
The two citizens and the victim gave deputies an immediate positive identification of the juvenile as the suspect, the report states.
There were no reported injuries and all of the victim’s property was recovered. The juvenile confessed to the robbery, the report adds.
