2 robbed in Bradenton after scrap metal deal goes bad

MANATEE — Two men thought they were going to buy old metal from a scrap seller in Bradenton on Sunday.

Instead they got robbed at gunpoint by the scrap seller and his accomplice and ended up empty handed, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

The incident occurred just before 2:30 p.m. behind a house on the 4200 block of Ninth Street East, Bradenton.

The victim got a phone call earlier on Sunday from the scrap seller with an offer to buy, according to a report.

A meeting was set up for around 2 p.m. and the victims met the scrap seller in the 3800 block of 11th Street East. The seller said the scrap was at a different location and had them drive to the 4200 block of Ninth Street East.

They drove behind the house at that location and discovered a second scrap seller waiting for them.

The victims saw a pile of junk and, thinking this was the metal they were going to buy, got out of the truck and started to lower the tailgate.

As they were doing this, the scrap sellers brandished a revolver and a semi-automatic handgun and demanded the victims’ money, a report states.

The suspects got an undisclosed amount of cash from the victims along with several cell phones.

The suspects fled on foot, leaving the victims uninjured, the report adds.
