MSO: Homeless man arrested after stolen vehicle chase in Manatee

MANATEE -- A 24-year-old homeless man was arrested Saturday after taking a deputy on a car chase and then fleeing on foot, the sheriff’s office reports.

Anthony J. Saffo was spotted by a deputy at around 2 p.m. driving a reported stolen vehicle in the 2600 block of 26th Street West, a media release states.

The deputy followed the vehicle until it pulled into a driveway in the 2200 block of 25th Avenue West. The deputy then “pulled up alongside the vehicle in an attempt to prevent the driver from exiting by blocking the driver’s door with the front passenger side of his car,” according to the release. But Saffo backed up and turned, hitting the passenger side of the deputy’s vehicle, and fled.

The deputy notified dispatch he was in pursuit, the release stated. The top speed was 50 mph, while weather was clear and traffic minimal.

Roughly 90 seconds later, Saffo stopped the car in the 400 block of 23rd Avenue West and fled on foot into the Sheridan Place Apartments, according to the release.

A passenger stayed in the vehicle and was detained, the release stated. Saffo was cornered by deputies inside the apartment complex and surrendered. He was not injured. Damage to both cars was minimal.
