MANATEE -- A suspect in a string of residential burglaries that has plagued west Palmetto since late last year has been arrested, according to the Palmetto Police Department.
Steven E. Haynes, 21, of Palmetto, was arrested Jan. 31 by Palmetto officers on a Hillsborough County arrest warrant.
Along with the warrant, Haynes has been charged with multiple counts of grand theft and two counts of defrauding a pawnbroker, police said. He remains in the Manatee County jail.
At the time of his arrest, Haynes had a large quantity of jewelry in his possession that was positively identified as belonging to several of the burglary victims, according to police. Further investigation revealed Haynes had also pawned items that had been taken in several Palmetto burglaries.
The investigation is ongoing and more arrests are expected. The police department is working with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office on possible connections to crimes in those jurisdictions.
He was being held at the Manatee County jail on bonds totaling $14,500.
