Manatee deputies: Man charged with stabbing thief who took his bike

MANATEE — A 29-year-old man was arrested on charges he stabbed another man at a Bradenton bar late Wednesday, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Abrahan Serrano cut the 32-year-old victim after the victim allegedly took Serrano's bicycle, according to a news release.

When deputies arrived at the El Paisano Bar, 5803 15th St. E., shortly before midnight, witnesses told them that the victim was bleeding and had fled south while the suspect had headed north. Serrano was quickly stopped in the 5700 block of 15th Street East.

Serrano deputies that someone had stolen his bicycle and he had confronted the thief. He denied that he had stabbed anyone, according to the report.

Deputies eventually located the victim, who was suffering from non-life-threatening cuts.

"The suspect eventually confessed that he picked up a broken bottle in self-defense and threw the bottle in self-defense and threw the bottle at the victim," the release stated. However, deputies said that was not consistent with the victim's injuries and evidence at the scene.

Serrano also told deputies he had chased the victim even after he had given up the bicycle, "indicating that the suspect went beyond the scope of self-defense and used more force than was necessary to retrieve his bicycle."

Serrano was being held without bond at the Manatee County jail on a charge of aggravated assault.
