Deputies checking out Bayshore High threat

MANATEE -- A message written on a bathroom wall at Bayshore High School threatening a “shootout on Valentine’s Day” is being investigated by the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, spokesman Dave Bristow said today.

Sheriff’s deputies are interviewing students on campus today. However, Bristow said the threat “appears to be a hoax.”

“We’re tracking the student that put the message on the wall,” Bristow said, adding that deputies believe they know who did it.

It’s unclear when the message was found. Bristow said deputies are taking it seriously. A number of law enforcement officers were on campus this morning, and Bristow said they also will be there on Valentine’s Day.

School district spokeswoman Margi Nanney said the district is aware of the investigation and will be making a comment later today.
