Manatee sheriff: Man hit with Taser after threatening firefighters

MANATEE — A 39-year-old man was hit by a Taser after he threatened firefighters responding to an accident scene in East Manatee, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

About 9:50 p.m. Saturday, Ronnie Cathcart was involved in a single-vehicle accident in the 24500 block of State Road 70 East, near Myakka City, according to a news release.

When firefighters arrived, Cathcart "was acting deranged," and was hiding his right hand in his shirt as if he was armed.

"The firefighters asked Cathcart what he had in his hand, to which he replied, 'Something that will hurt you if you don't shoot me,'" the news release states.

Firefighters then took cover behind their truck and called the sheriff's office.

Deputies closed the highway, and maneuvered into position near Cathcart. When he expose his right hand for a moment, a deputy used his Taser on Cathcart, according to the sheriff's office.

Cathcart was taken to Lakewood Ranch Medical Center for medical clearance, before being transported to the Manatee County jail. He was being held without bond on two charges of assault on a public safety officer.
