24 airbags stolen from Palmetto auto auction lot

MANATEE -- Airbags were stolen over the past weekend from 24 vehicles parked at a Palmetto auto auction lot, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

The thefts at Insurance Auto Auction Inc., 1208 17th St. E., occurred between 7 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. this morning, according to a news release. The total estimated loss was $12,000, according to the sheriff's office.

The business is secured by a fence, alarms and a surveillance system but the alarm did not activate and nothing was captured by the camera, according to the sheriff's office. Off-duty sheriff's deputies were also on scene on Friday and Saturday nights.

"None of the vehicles were locked and all of them were processed for prints but none could be lifted, though it was evident that the areas had been wiped," the release states.
