Bradenton man hit by gunfire that may have been part of New Year's celebration

MANATEE — A Bradenton man late Friday was injured by gunfire that may have been part of a neighbor's New Year's celebration, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

The 36-year-old victim was in his backyard in the 2900 block of Eighth Street West just before midnight when he felt a pain on his right side, near his hip. When he got inside, he realized he had been shot from above, according to a news release.

The bullet entered about two inches above the man's hip and traveled about five inches in a downward direction, according to the sheriff's office.

The victim's wife drove him to Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, where he was interviewed by deputies.

The victim said he thinks he was hit by a stray bullet because he had heard gunfire as part of a New Year's celebration, according to the sheriff's office.

The victim was treated and released, and was expected to make a full recovery.
