MSO: Couple tries to scam Bradenton store

MANATEE -- A couple attempted to scam Target out of $22 Thursday afternoon after they returned items they never bought, the sheriff’s office reports.

Summer Acuff, 34, and Casey Lyon, 38, were caught at around 5:17 p.m. by security cameras rummaging through a trash can outside of the Target on 6150 14th St W. for a receipt.

They then picked out the exact items on the receipt, which were worth about $22, and bought them to the returns counter and asked for their money back, according to a media release.

On their way out of the store the pair was caught by security, the release said.

Acuff has two previous convictions of theft and is currently on felony probation for grand theft, the release said. She has been charged with felony retail theft and for violating her felony probation. Lyon was charged with retail theft.

Meanwhile, Acuff’s 4-month-old son was with them during the crime. Child Protective Services is assisting in finding a place for the infant.
