Bradenton police arrest man in connection with forged prescription

BRADENTON — A 21-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after he attempted to fill a forged prescription at a Walgreens store, the Bradenton Police Department reports.

The incident occurred at about 3:10 p.m. on Dec. 13 in the 4200 block of Manatee Avenue East when Cody Steven Riedel handed the pharmacist a fake prescription for 100 30 mg pills of Oxycontin, according to the arrest report.

Wary about the request the pharmacist contacted the doctor whose name was on the prescription to verify it, the report said. The doctor stated he did not recognize Riedel’s name and that he doesn’t write prescriptions for Oxycontin.

During the course of the investigation it was discovered Riedel got the prescription from a former employee of the doctor who has since fled to Virginia, the report said.

He was arrested at 12:40 p.m. Tuesday in the 2100 block of 12th Avenue West and, after being read his rights, Riedel said he knew what he did was illegal, but he did it because he wanted to help a friend out, the report stated. He was also to make $200 in exchange for his efforts.

Riedel was released from Manatee County jail Tuesday on a $1,000 bond and has been charged with obtaining a controlled substance by fraud.
