2 charged in Manatee with stealing copper wire

MANATEE — Two men were arrested early this morning on charges they stole copper wiring from 43 light poles, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies on patrol on Ranch Lake Boulevard off State Road 70 in East Manatee spotted a parked car registered to Roy Surber, 33, according to a news release. The vehicle was cold and had dew on it, suggesting it had been there a while.

Bundles of copper electrical wire and wire cutters were found near the car, according to the sheriff's office.

A short time later, deputies found Surber and a second man, Joseph Hostetler, 26, hiding in a nearby wooded area and arrested them.

"It was determined that a total of 43 light poles had the wiring pulled from them," the news release states.

Surber and Hostetler were being held in the Manatee County jail on bonds of $15,000 each. They are each charged with grand theft.
