Woman, 83, robbed outside of supermarket in Palmetto

PALMETTO — A 83-year-old woman was robbed Saturday afternoon while walking to her car in a Publix parking lot, the Palmetto Police Department reports.

The incident happened at about 3 p.m. in the 1100 block of 8th Avenue West.

The woman was walking to her car when a man who is believed to be between 20 to 30-years-old jumped out of the bushes, pushed her down and ran off with her bag, Sgt. Robert Taylor said.

The victim’s purse contained a small amount of cash, credit cards and a cell phone.

“It was a crime of opportunity,” Taylor said, stressing that it was an isolated incident.

The victim suffered a couple of scraps and bruises as a result of the robbery, but wasn’t taken to the hospital, Taylor said.

Law enforcement is currently in the process of reviewing surveillance video from Publix.

The suspect is described to be about five feet six inches tall, muscular build with dark, curly hair. He was last seen wearing blue pants and a solid blue, long sleeved, button down shirt.

Anyone with more information is asked to call the Palmetto Police Department at (941) 721-2000.
