The sheriff’s office received a call Monday from an automotive shop employee that a missing 2004 Pontiac Grand AM with a LoJack system was parked at the intersection of 43rd Street East and State Road 64.
According to the report, a deputy spotted the vehicle in a Walgreens parking lot and saw James Cates, 43, unlocking the car with a key.
Cates was arrested shortly thereafter.
After being read his rights, Cates said he borrowed the vehicle and that he was going to pay to use it. Cates also told a deputy that he went to Walgreens to pick up a prescription and denied any drug use other than marijuana.
Cates has been charged with vehicle theft and is currently in Manatee County jail under a $12,500 bond.
