Manatee man arrested after 'accidental' shooting Wednesday

MANATEE — A 46-year-old man was arrested after detectives say he accidentally shot his son and a woman with a handgun he found in the trash about a month ago, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Roger L. Sexton faces two charges of culpable negligence with injury for the shootings, which occurred about 7:37 p.m. Wednesday in the 4400 block of 87th Street West, just off Cortez Road, according to a news release.

Sexton told investigators he had fired one round into the ground while outside in the backyard.

As he was re-entering through a rear screened porch, Sexton "accidentally" fired the gun, according to the report.

The bullet struck his son on the side right above the waist line, exited and then hit a 47-year-old woman who was in the porch in the abdomen, the sheriff's office said.

Both suffered what were described as non-life-threatening injuries. The woman was later released from a local hospital.

Sexton this morning was being held at the Manatee County jail on bonds totaling $1,000.
