Sheriff: Bradenton man tried to kill ex-girlfriend's son

MANATEE -- A 50-year-old man was arrested early this morning on charges that he tried to kill the son a woman he used to date, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

The 28-year-old victim, his mother and a few other people had been visiting Gary Zehr for a few days at his home in the 3000 block of 46th Avenue East, Bradenton. Zehr had been agitated most of Wednesday because of the presence of the woman, according to a news release.

Zehr returned home about 12:20 a.m. after being out to celebrate the Cinco de Mayo holiday and began arguing with the victim, at one point say, "I'm gonna shoot you," the news release states.

The victim followed Zehr into the bedroom, trying to call him down. Zehr grabbed a .45-caliber pistol from underneath the mattress and placed it against the victim's right temple, according to the sheriff's office.

The victim ducked and Zehr fired a single shot, missing the victim.

The victim ran from the room, and the other people inside locked themselves in bedrooms. Zehr fled the house on foot.

Deputies arrested Zehr outside the house.

The victim complained of hearing problems but was otherwise not injured, according to the report.

Zehr was being held without bond at the Manatee County jail on charges of attempted murder and shooting within an occupied dwelling.
