Passenger dies in single-vehicle crash in Manatee

MANATEE — The Florida Highway Patrol was investigating whether alcohol was involved in a fatal traffic crash this morning in southern Manatee County, according to a news release.

About 3:18 a.m., Carlos A. Rivera, 39, of Bradenton, was driving a Toyota pick-up truck north on Cooper Creek Boulevard east of Charleston Street when he failed to negotiate a curve, drove over a curb and struck some shrubbery and a tree and came to rest on the east shoulder of Cooper Creek Boulevard. The vehicle then caught fire, according to the FHP.

Rivera's passenger, Haudrey F. Figueurdo, 28, of Alma, Ga., was killed, and Rivera was taken to Lakewood Ranch Medical Center in serious condition.
