Manatee sheriff investigates copper theft

MANATEE - The Manatee County Sheriff's Office was investigating the theft of several thousands of dollars worth of copper power lines at an industrial park off University Parkway.

Sometime between 6 p.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. today, someone cut and removed lines between the Florida Power and Light supply and three businesses in the 2900 block of University Parkway, 2200 block of 60th Drive East and 5800 block of 24th Street East. In a fourth case, the FPL end of the line was cut, but it was not removed.

The value of the stolen wire was unknown, but the repairs were estimated to cost about $1,000 per incident.

"The stolen, thick, braided industrial copper wire is 20-30 feet long on average," a news release states.
