Coast Guard ends search for diver

ANNA MARIA ISLAND — The search for a missing Sarasota diver who disappeared 28 miles west of Anna Maria Island this weekend remains on hold as officials wait for any clues as to where he might be.

The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search for 35-year-old Ron Wunderlich just after 9:30 p.m. Saturday, 12 hours after receiving a call that he had been free diving at about 115 feet without an emergency breathing apparatus and had not returned to the surface.

A search with a Coast Guard helicopter, three Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission boats and divers from the Sarasota Police Department was conducted on a 68-square-mile area without results.

The search for the diver will be suspended until further information is obtained that could provide information on where to continue looking, Coast Guard Petty Officer Sondra-Kay Kneen said Monday.
