Manatee sheriff: Homeowner holds burglar at gunpoint until deputies arrived

MANATEE - A homeowner got the upper hand on a burglar after he awoke and held the intruder at gunpoint until authorities arrived, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

About 2:50 a.m. this morning, Joseph W. Tinyes cut a portion of a screened pool cage in the rear of a residence in the 7900 block of Indigo Ridge Terrace, in the University Place section of southern Manatee, according to a news release.

While in the residence, Tinyes removed a vase from a closed curio cabinet and put it outside in the patio deck. He then re-entered the residence, searched the garage and then went to the resident's bedroom, the sheriff's office said.

As Tinyes walked towards the resident, he awoke, grabbed a gun and held Tinyes at gunpoint until deputies arrived.

Tinyes was arrested and was being held at the Manatee County jail on bonds totaling $10,240 on charges of burglary, theft and criminal mischief.
