'Hungry' gunman robs man of $2, pills in Manatee

MANATEE - A self-described "hungry" gunman early this morning robbed a 58-year-old man while he was waiting for his workplace to open, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

About 4:30 a.m., the victim was in his van in a parking lot in the 3100 block of 29th Avenue East, when he was approached by a man carrying "what appeared to be an old, very tattered semi-auto pistol of a small caliber with medical tape on the grip," a news release states.

The gunman demanded money. The victim said he had only $2, to which the suspect said, "I don't care, I'm hungry."

As the victim retrieved the money, the gunman rummaged through the center console, where he found a bottle of Lortab pills, which he emptied into his sweater pocket, according to the sheriff's office.

He then fled on foot, south across 29th Avenue East, and behind a business.

Deputies used a police dog to track the suspect but no arrest was made.

The suspect was described as standing 5 feet, 9 inches tall and weighing 160 pounds, with long blond hair and a scruffy beard. He was wearing gloves, a brown knit stocking cap, black hooded sweatshirt, jeans and white tennis shoes.
