Manatee boy, 5, safe after going missing this morning

MANATEE - The Manatee County Sheriff's Office opened a child neglect investigation after a 5-year-old child briefly went missing this morning.

A woman had left her son with his 19-year-old brother. The teenager left the boy alone for about 20 minutes while he ran some errands, and when he returned to his residence in the 2800 block of Ninth Street East, about 8 a.m. the child was gone, according to the sheriff's office.

The older brother called 911, and deputies began a search between the residence and the boy's school, Rogers Garden Elementary School, 515 13th Ave. W.

The search was called off after the boy was spotted getting off a school bus at Samoset Elementary School, 3300 19th St. E. Officials called authorities when they recognized he did not belong at the school, the sheriff's office said.
