MANATEE - A mobile home resident early this morning lost his gun during a struggle with a burglar who had broken into his car. Several shots were fired, but no one was injured, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.
The 63-year-old victim confronted the burglars at about 4:54 a.m. as one of them crawled through the window of his vehicle outside a residence in the 3100 block of Ninth Street West, in the Gar Fair Mobile Home Park. There was a struggle in the carport, and a suspect was able to get control of the victim's gun, according to a news release.
The suspects fled south towards foot bridge on Ninth Street West, with a TV/DVD player taken from the vehicle and the victim's gun. Witnesses reported hearing several shots as the suspects fled, but they did not know if they were shooting at the victim or just up in the air, the sheriff's office said.
Sheriff's deputies were investigating whether the break-in was connected with other similar burglaries in the area.
One of the suspects was described as being in his late teens or early 20s and wearing a black sweater and white T-shirt. There was no description provided for the second suspect.
