Shots rang out at a Tampa gas station overnight after what police believe was an attempted robbery.
Tampa police were called to a Sunoco gas station at East Hillsborough Avenue and 34th Street early Friday morning, according to a news release.
Preliminary information indicates a man may have tried to rob the gas station at gunpoint. The clerk, according to police, grabbed his own gun and shot the man in the leg.
Police told WFLA News Channel 8 shell casings were found near the front of the store. The man ran to another nearby gas station and collapsed in the parking lot, but the clerk followed him there and held him at gunpoint until police arrived.
It’s still early in the investigation and police are looking into whether the man was using a real gun or a pellet gun, according to WFLA.
“That doesn’t change the facts of the case,” Lt. Ricardo Urbinas told WFLA. “The clerk wouldn’t have known that when the gun was pointed at his face and he still has a right to defend himself.”
Police continue to investigate the shooting.
