LAKEWOOD RANCH -- Thanks to regular mentions in the past few weeks on Facebook and Twitter, 85 percent of this year's fund-raising goal of $42,000, for the annual MS Walk in Lakewood Ranch has already been raised, according to Mary Healey, development manager for the Mid-Florida Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
About 350 people have signed up to take part in the 4th annual MS Walk around Lake Uihlein in Lakewood Ranch starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, with registration beginning at 8 a.m. near Lakewood Ranch Cinemas.
"Families, friends, and corporate teams have signed up for the walk so far, and we welcome anyone who wants to walk with us to come by and register on site. There is no cost to walk and all we ask for is a suggested $25 donation," Healey said.
The MS Walk, which will take about 45 minutes to complete, spans 1.5 miles around Lake Uihlein and Main Street and walkers will have the option to take the same route twice, if they wish.
Those who want to bring their dogs along for a stroll are encouraged to do so. Activities frollowing the walk include free coffee and donuts donated by Dunkin' Donuts, a DJ spinning music, a variety of vendors, and face painting for children.
Participants can enter to win raffle prizes, such as an athletic-training package contributed by IMG Academy in Bradenton, and art classes by Let's Create Art in Lakewood Ranch.
Students from Lakewood Ranch High School and IMG Academy will serve as volunteers for the event in several capacities.
Preregistration for the MS Walk can be completed online at walkflc.nationalmssociety.org.
