LAKEWOOD RANCH -- North Carolina-style barbecue restaurant and catering company Nancy's Bar-B-Que, a popular eatery in downtown Sarasota, plans to open a Lakewood Ranch location in May.
Owner Nancy Krohngold says she has signed a lease for a 100-square-foot storefront location at 104 Main St., which will feature a streamlined menu, but all the smoky favorites that her Sarasota customers enjoy,
Sporting the same country-style feel as the other location, Nancy's Bar-B-Que will line the south side of Main Street between Serendipity Boutique & Formal Wear and Barre3, a new yoga/pilates studio scheduled to open March 2.

"We've always had the awareness of Lakewood Ranch residents and a catering presence for businesses there, but this will give us a foothold to expand. I obviously feel very optimistic about the opportunity out there," she said.
A second restaurant planned last July at the Square at University Town Center, near Honore Avenue and the Mall at University Town Center, failed to materialize. But Krohngold said the Lakewood Ranch location will be what residents east of Interstate 75 have been asking for, especially those who don't want to deal with mall traffic and who prefer the quieter appeal of Main Street.
"There is no barbecue in the University Parkway-Lakewood Ranch area and our customers who live there begged us to move across the interstate," she said.
Krohngold said she isn't planning a grand opening for the new restaurant, preferring instead a soft opening so the new employees who are hired can smoothly transition into their new positions.
However, once the store does get settled, Krohngold said there may be room for a future Nancy's Bar-B-que along with her expanded catering business in Lakewood Centre to the north, where quite a bit of new residential, retail and office development is taking place.
"We might need a bigger location for the future. The road is freshly paved."
