LAKEWOOD RANCH -- The first major sporting event at the Lakewood Ranch sports complex is set for early spring, according to Schroeder-Manatee Ranch Inc.
The Florida Youth Soccer Association (FYSA) boys state cup that includes 48 teams in the 15-, 16- and 17-year-old divisions will take place at the complex April 30 and May 1. The teams will compete on eight new soccer fields.
“We could not be more excited about the FYSA coming to Lakewood Ranch,” said Tim Mulqueen, director of sports at Lakewood Ranch. “Forty-eight teams of about 20 players per team, plus their friends and families will mean a huge influx of people into Sarasota and Manatee counties that weekend, and promises to impact the local economy in a big way and this is just the beginning.”
SMR is conducting a contest to come up with a name and logo for the new complex. Contest rules and prize information can be found online at www.lakewoodranch.com. The contest runs through March 1.
Mulqueen said the complex will ultimately have 22 full-sized, mixed-use fields for soccer, lacrosse and other amateur sports.
It will feature Celebration grass and underground irrigation.
