A 56-year-old man was seriously injured after he fell asleep while driving and drove his car off the road on Monday afternoon, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
About 1:13 p.m., the man, who is from Wimauma, was traveling eastbound on State Road 62, when he traveled into the westbound lane and onto the north shoulder of State Road 62. His vehicle, a 2005 Kia Amanti, traveled on the north shoulder for about 300 feet, rotated counter-clockwise in ditch, and then overturned in the westbound lane of State Road 62, according to a news release.
The man, who was flown by helicopter to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton, told troopers he had fallen asleep, according to the report.
The man, who was cited for failure to maintain a single land, was listed in serious condition at the hospital, according to FHP.
