Manatee libraries to give free meals to children in need for the weekends

This summer local children in need can go to any of the six Manatee County library locations to receive meals for the weekend.

Beginning Friday and running through Aug. 5, children can stop by any library branch on Fridays and “ask for a food bag that will provide basic meals and snacks to nourish them during the weekend,” according to a news release.

With more than half of Manatee County children qualifying for free or reduced-price meals during the school year, the School District of Manatee County provides meals for these children during the week but not on weekends. The White Out Summer Hunger program, which is a partnership with The Food Bank of Manatee and Manatee Libraries, fills the need on the weekends.

“There are no eligibility requirements to meet to request a bag, though the bags are intended for school-aged children,” according to the release.
