Manatee County sheriff's deputy punched in face during arrest

MANATEE -- A Manatee County Sheriff's Office deputy was punched in the face at 1:25 a.m. Sunday while trying to arrest a subject on a felony warrant, authorities said.

Deputy C. Briles got punched by Angel Welborn, 22, during a scuffle when Welborn attempted to run away at 904 30th Ave. E., according to a sheriff's office report.

As the fight continued, Briles deployed a stun device, which had some effect but Welborn was able to run away again, the report states.

Briles caught up to Welborn and was finally able to get him into custody with the help of another deputy, according to the report.

Welborn was in the Manatee County jail on Sunday subject to a $1,000 bond. He was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, operating a motor vehicle without a license and resisting arrest, according to the jail website.
