Gospel music event takes
place Feb. 2
PALMETTO -- The Martins will be featured in Palmetto at 7 p.m. Feb. 2 in the Bradenton Area Convention Center during the 2015 Winter Gospel Music Convention.
Mark Lowry, Ernie Haase & Signature Sound and The Browns will join the Martins.
Siblings Judy, Jonathan and Joyce Martin rose to national and international success, showcasing their harmonies before the White House to Carnegie Hall. Over the years the trio garnered six Dove Awards from the Gospel Music Association, a Grammy nomination and multiple hit songs.

New Beginnings II meeting set Thursday on safety
SARASOTA -- Sarasota Police Chief Bernadette DiPino, members of the Sarasota Police Department and United Sarasota and Harwood Institute Conversations, will hold a neighborhood and community meeting called "New Beginnings II" for business owners and residents in North Sarasota at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Robert L. Taylor Community Center, 1845 34th.
The discussion will focus on community-orientated policing and quality of life issues, including mental illness. Earlier neighborhood meetings were held in July and September.
"New Beginnings II" is an update of previous initiative, "A New Beginning for Newtown."
Residents, community members, business owners and media are invited and asked to arrive at 5:30 p.m. to fill out a survey on community safety and mental health. Coffee, water and light snacks will be provided. Residents are welcome to bring their favorite dessert to share.
Free hearing awareness forum for veterans Feb. 7
SARASOTA -- A free hearing awareness forum for veterans and their families is set for 9 a.m.- 1 p.m. Feb. 7 at Community Foundation, 2635 Fruitville Road, Sarasota. Participants can learn about technology, services, and communication strategies. There will be door prizes and complimentary breakfast and lunch.

Special Valentine's brunch for young ladies set Feb. 14
SARASOTA -- The Sarasota Family YMCA is holding a special Valentine's brunch for young ladies, ages 10-18, at 10 a.m. Feb. 14, at the Robert L. Taylor Community Center, 1845 34th St., Sarasota.
Also sponsored by the Safe Children Coalition, Sarasota County Sheriff's Office and Target, and will be held.
Keynote address "Following Your Dreams and Aspirations" will be given by author and certified life coach Shávon Reed.
