Applications sought for MLK Day work projects
BRADENTON -- For the second year, State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota, will sponsor a community MLK Day of Service Jan. 19, joining a nationwide effort to transform the federal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. into a day of community service.
Through funding from the Florida Legislature, SCF is providing opportunities for a 2015 MLK Day of Service for community organizations in Manatee and Sarasota counties to complete service projects in Florida District 70. Up to $10,000 each may be awarded to organizations for service projects to benefit the community.
"We are pleased state Rep. Darryl Rouson has steered a portion of the allocation to SCF again this year," said SCF President Carol Probstfeld.
To learn how to apply for funding, community organization representatives must attend an information session at SCF Bradenton, 5840 26th St. W., building 5, room 123.
Eligible service projects can address education, health, clean energy/environmental stewardship, economic opportunity, disaster preparedness, support for veterans and military families, public safety and neighborhood issues.
The deadline to apply is 4 p.m. Nov. 17. MLK Day of Service activities must begin Jan. 19 and be complete by Jan. 26. Award recipients will be required to attend a celebration event in February.
