SCF pianist to give recital Sept. 25
BRADENTON -- State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota music faculty member Aza Torshkoeva will perform a piano recital at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at SCF Bradenton, 5840 26th St. W., in Neel Performing Arts Center, building 11 East.
Torshkoeva will present an extensive variety of classical music, including Rachmanioff's "Vocalise," Beethoven's "Waldstein" (Piano Sonata No. 21)," Liszt's Piano Sonata in b-minor and Chopin's Nocturne in c sharp minor.
A native of Russia, Torshkoeva attended the College of Music in Petropavlosk-Kamchatskiy, Russia, and the School of Music in Professional Education of Piano Playing in Elizovo, Russia. Torshkoeva won the Florida Orchestra's Concerto Competition as well as more than 30 Russian regional and international piano competitions.
She earned the presidential scholarship from the president of Russia and was included in the Encyclopedia of the Most Talented Children of Russia. Torshkoeva received her master's degree in piano performance from USF.

New SAL Half Marathon route takes shape
SARASOTA -- Registration is open for the fifth annual SAL Half Marathon, which benefits the Sheriff's Activities League of Sarasota County.
The 13.1 mile course is improved this year to minimize the twists and turns. The fast, flat route still takes runners through scenic Palmer Ranch and The Legacy Trail.
The SAL Half Marathon start/finish line is now merged at Sarasota Square Boulevard (northeast corner of Westfield Sarasota Square) and the race remains certified by the USA Track and Field organization.
The first 500 Half Marathon registrants will receive a Racetrackers lightweight running hat, and all runners will receive a long-sleeve tech shirt and sheriff's star finisher medal. Awards will be given six-deep for each category during the post-race party, which includes food, music and prizes.
The 4-mile Reindeer Dash is new. Anyone registering for this family friendly fun run receives a finisher medal designed by a student at Taylor Ranch Elementary School and a T-shirt.
Running club and high school track team members can y register for $55 and non-members for $60. Prices increase after Oct. 31.
