I must express my vehement disapproval of the developers of Long Bar Pointe and their request to change the county comprehensive plan or codes which would allow for a 100-boat marina, high-rise condos, and more residential units than was in the original proposal.
This is the only part of Sarasota Bay where one can truly feel like they are in a wild and scenic place away from people and development. This relatively untouched area is by far the greatest jewel in the estuarine treasury that is Sarasota Bay.
Any further development in this area -- especially high-rises, which would be visible from the water -- would be a huge loss to the residents who like the wild feel of the place and the great fishing, kayaking and birding.
The mangroves here are being cut down enough already. This is insanity. The wading birds and pelicans need a full canopy of mangroves so they can roost in relative safety. Mangrove cutting heights are so low that there are very few places they can do this anymore in the bay.
I pray that the county does the right thing and opposes more development than was already approved in the Long Bar Pointe area.
