Manatee commission delays decision on Little League fields

MANATEE -- Manatee County commissioners decided Tuesdayto meet individually with their legal staff before making any decisions about new ballfields for Palmetto's North River American Little League.

County Administrator Ed Hunzeker recommended that the commission halt plans to build new ballfields at Blackstone Park in Palmetto because the 12-acre section of the park where they would have been placed showed chemical contamination that would increase the project's costs from $1 million to approximately $3.3 million, and extend the completion time to 2 1/2 years.

The commission discussed the possibility of converting softball fields at Blackstone Park into Little League fields, but took no action. The commission said it plans to review alternatives at a later date.
