A man trying to cross U.S. 41 early Saturday morning was critically injured when he was struck by a car, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Billy B. Welch, 27, of Caddo Mills, Texas, was attempting to cross the highway at about 2:05 a.m. near the intersection of 50th Avenue Plaza West, an accident report said. Welsh walked into the path of a car driven by Shawnetta DeSilva of Bradenton.
DeSilva was not able to stop in time, the report said, and hit Welch, throwing him onto the hood and windshield of the vehicle. He landed on the highway 99 feet from the point of impact, the report said.
Welch was taken to Blake Medical Center in critical condition. Neither DeSilva or the passenger in the car was injured, the report said.
